THE THRESHOLD JOURNEY · CREATED BY CLAIRE HARRIS

When the way you’ve been living no longer fits

You might know something needs to change without knowing what that change should be.

Perhaps you keep putting your own needs last. A role you once felt comfortable in has become exhausting. Or your life looks fine from the outside, but you no longer feel fulfilled within it.

A threshold does not have to begin with a dramatic life event. It can begin with the quiet recognition that you no longer want to live according to a particular belief, expectation or pattern.

The Threshold Journey is a framework I created to give language and orientation to these passages. It offers a way to understand where you are, what you are noticing and what you may need as you begin to live differently.

A MAP FOR THE SPACE BETWEEN

Not an answer.
An orientation.

A threshold is a lived passage: an old way of being has become difficult to sustain, while the new one is still taking shape.

That space can feel uncertain. You may understand what you no longer want before you can name what comes next. You may feel ready for change one day and hesitant the next.

The Threshold Journey helps you recognise these experiences without demanding that you immediately solve them.

THE PHASES OF THE THRESHOLD JOURNEY

Where do you
recognise yourself?

These descriptions are invitations to recognise your experience. You may relate to more than one, or find that different parts of your life sit in different places.

The Crumble

“This life no longer fits.”

Nothing has necessarily fallen apart, but something feels different. You may feel less interested in things that once mattered, tired of keeping everything going, or quietly dissatisfied without a clear explanation.

You might recognise yourself here if you keep thinking, “I should be happy with this,” while noticing that you aren’t.

The Edge

“I know something needs to change.”

You can see more clearly what is no longer working. Yet knowing this does not automatically make the next step easy. You may hesitate, consider other people’s reactions or wait until you feel more certain.

You might recognise yourself here if you know you cannot keep doing things in the same way, but have not yet found a way forward that feels possible.

The Descent

“What was familiar is falling away. I don’t yet know what comes next.”

The Descent can be a quiet unravelling or feel like everything is coming apart. A relationship, a role, a belief or the future you imagined may no longer hold. There can be grief, anger, relief and moments when you barely recognise your own life.

You may begin to see what you have carried, tolerated or built your sense of self around. Sometimes you choose to let it go. Sometimes it falls away before you feel ready.

You might recognise yourself here if you cannot return to how things were, but do not yet feel steady in what comes next.

There is no required intensity to this phase. Your experience deserves care, whether it is unfolding quietly or feels like walking through fire.

The Integration

“I’m learning to live differently.”

Understanding begins to become part of everyday life. You may be practising a boundary, making room for your own needs or choosing differently in a familiar situation.

You might recognise yourself here if you know what you want to change and are learning how to support that change in real life, even when old habits return.

The Emergence

“I’m beginning to trust the way I live now.”

There may be more space to make choices from what matters to you. You are discovering how it feels to participate in life with a clearer sense of yourself.

You might recognise yourself here if the changes you have been making are beginning to feel more natural, and you are considering what you want to welcome next.

THE SPIRAL

Why you can revisit
familiar ground.

The Threshold Journey is a spiral, rather than a straight line.

You may revisit a familiar theme after making meaningful changes. A boundary you can hold in one relationship may feel harder in another. An old belief may become visible in a situation you have not faced before.

Returning to something does not automatically mean you have lost your progress. You may be meeting it with more awareness, different choices or a clearer understanding of what you need.

You do not need to reach a final phase and stay there.

THE ORIENTATION SESSION

Explore your
threshold with me.

You do not need to arrive with a clear explanation or a plan.

An Orientation Session offers a place to begin exploring what you are noticing, what feels difficult to continue and where you would like more clarity.

We can use the Threshold framework to help give language to your experience, while leaving room for your own circumstances and pace.
